Overview
Creamland Dairies was formed in 1937 when Albuquerque businessman Albert G. Simms teamed up with a group of dairy farmers to purchase the Albuquerque Dairy Association, a dairy cooperative formed in 1920. The new associates selected a site in Albuquerque's downtown area - 321 Second Street NW. In 1948, the plant was relocated 18 blocks north to 1911 Second Street where it remains today.
In 1956, Creamland merged with the Darrow Ice Cream Company, also based in Albuquerque, and began producing ice cream at a location at Broadway and Coal SE.
The first modern, filtered air, cottage cheese processing room in New Mexico was added during the 1960's. The 1990's was a decade of growth, modernization, and technological innovation. The plant installed and began using the newest equipment and processing techniques available.
Creamland became a member of Quality Chek'd Dairy Association in 1960. In 1965, Bell Dairy Products of Lubbock, Texas and their associates acquired controlling interest in Creamland. Dean Foods Company, Inc. acquired Creamland in 1978. In turn, Dean Foods Company was purchased by Suiza Foods in 2001; however, the resulting company retained the name Dean Foods and was based in Dallas, Texas.
Today Creamland employs approximately 200 people, many who have been with the company 30 years or more. Creamland supports a variety of community organizations and fund-raising efforts.
And then there's Airabelle, the Creamland Cow that graces Albuquerque skies every October during Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta. Creamland has participated in the Balloon Fiesta since 1988.
Highlights
One of Creamland's most popular and requested products is their sour cream chip dips. Creamland has recently added the Swiss Tea and Naked Juice lines to their product offerings.
Creamland has been the recipient of the Quality Chek'd Zimmerman Marketing Award 5 times since joining the organization. Yearly they also have received product quality awards from Quality Chek'd Dairy Association.
Due to the popularity of ballooning, and the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta held annually in October in Albuquerque, Creamland has become known for their popular hot air cow balloon, Airabelle. Airabelle has received the Fiesta's People's Choice Favorite Special Shape Award five times.
